BMGT 487 – Team Assignment #1 Project Selection (Week 1)

NOTE: All submitted work is to be your original work. You may not use any work from another student, the Internet or an online clearinghouse. You are expected to understand the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy, and know that it is your responsibility to learn about instructor and general academic expectations with regard to proper citation of sources as specified in the APA Publication Manual, 7th Ed. (Students are held accountable for in-text citations and an associated reference list only).

Team Deliverable 1 is due Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. eastern time of week 1 unless otherwise changed by the instructor.

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to introduce you to the project selection process and the multi-faceted role of a project manager.

Outcomes Met With This Assignment:

contribute to a team activity to accomplish the goals of a project, recognizing the unique strengths and talents of individual team members
identify, analyze, and evaluate the factors that contribute to the project selection process
Instructions:

This assignment is the first of seven group deliverables. Members of the team will collaborate acting as a self-managed team. As a self-managed team, members take a collective responsibility for ensuring the team operates effectively, sets team goals, manages time, makes decisions and solve problems, communicates frequently and clearly, and meets the deadline. You may have team members that are located all over the world. Working in a virtual environment should not stop the self-managed team from being successful in reaching the final goal.

The primary group communication should take place in the group discussion area, which your instructor will observe. If your group interacts through other online services (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, GotoMeeting, etc.), that service must be accessible to everyone in the group. When using online, one group member should take minutes of the meeting and post them to the groups locker.

Each week as a self-managed team, the following is the work for which team members are responsible:

setting goals
determining roles and responsibilities for each team member
actively participating and communicating in the Group area of the classroom
completing the agreed upon work prior to the deadline
resolving problems and issues among the team members
agreeing on a final product as a group (consensus decision making)
submitting the final product into the Assignment Folder (for Team Deliverables, one student from each group will submit into the Assignment Folder)
Collaboration starts by having one member of the team go into the Group area and create two new threads for each week.

Week “X” Team Responsibilities
Week “X” Discussion
Under the first thread, your team will set goals, determine the roles and responsibilities of each team member, determine a schedule for communication, set deadlines (do not set the deadline for the last day), and any other needed schedule to complete the task. Under the second thread, the team will discuss the content for the week, approach for the team deliverable, and any other information for that week.

Step 1: Potential Projects

As a group, you will look at list of projects and assess the different projects through the group discussion. Identify and select three potential projects from the list. Then from the three projects, select the project of choice that the group will use as the basis for the Team and Individual Deliverables this term.

1. Home addition

2. Fitness App for iOS

3. Wedding Shower

4. Vertical Axis Windmill

5. Flash Mob

6. Garage conversion to an apartment

7. Hardware upgrade to 1,500 employees

8. Mini house (under 300 square feet)

Step 2: Identify and Evaluate

Under Discussion on the main navigation bar, locate your group.

In the LEO classroom (do not use external systems), participate in a brainstorming and collaboration session with your project team to select your organizations.

Work with the project team to identify and discuss three (3) potential projects. Discuss which of the available projects are suitable based on the team’s composition.

Step 3: Write an Introduction paragraph

The Introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of the paper and will be used to describe to the reader the intent of the paper. This intent should be understood prior to reading the remainder of the paper so the reader knows exactly what is being covered in the paper.

Step 4: Project Selection

Review the following article on SMART Projects.

Haughey, D. (2016). Smart goals. Retrieved from https://www.projectsmart.co.uk/smart-goals.php
