For this authentic assignment submission, you will introduce Negi’s family and their story to your readers, with your submission being evaluated according to the guidelines of the MSMU Community Rubric download .

Here is the Community SLO: 1. Students will critically analyze and apply disciplinary perspectives and contexts to the studies of communities, in order to build a sense of responsibility and skills necessary to serve. (GE 5B Central Core – Community) download

Your authentic assignment submission needs to demonstrate proficiency according to the following criteria from the Community Rubric:

Describe the community, or the nature of community
Explain the theory/concept
Analyze the aspect of (the) community
Develop a sense of responsibility to serve

Your submission needs to critically analyze and evaluate how communities are created, destroyed, and/or reconstituted in Santiago’s novel. For “explain(ing) the theory/concept” criteria, be sure to include vocabulary for analysis from our course, demonstrating your fluency with the Spanish terms Santiago lists in the “Glossary” in the back of her book.

Please consider the multi-layered role(s) of community in the novel:

the community, or communities, depicted in the work
the community of readers who consume Santiago’s novel and/or your column
the community, real and/or imagined, of activists inspired, and/or depressed, by the novel and/or your column

Ultimately, you should analyze how the novel depicts community. How does it build, and/or destroy, a sense of responsibility in the characters depicted in the work and the audience reading it, thereby cultivating the skills necessary to serve in the community and/or the global world?

Your newspaper column should be at least 1,500 words and needs to be double-spaced, using MLA format.
