What would be the core elements of a conflict resolution procedure that you would develop?

In most organizations, there is a process for problem-solving or conflict resolution that employees are advised to follow. Conflict resolution procedures have to be reinforced greatly to become a natural response for behaviors (Stvahn et al., 1997). In other words, ongoing conflict resolution training is something that I would implement. I would also highlight the conflict resolution guide for the organization. As this may be different in every environment, it is going to be important to focus on the details of the procedure and provide examples of how to correctly implement the conflict resolution procedure.

As a leader, what would concern you most if this situation arose? Why?

As a leader, my main focus would be ensuring that the students and staff are safe in their environment. The late bus schedule could affect students making it to school or not. It could also impact the students routine. Another concern that I would have is the conversations that are occurring among the school staff. It is unacceptable for teachers to be speaking negatively in a room where students can hear. Yes, it is important to give teachers an opportunity to vent. However, teachers need to be aware of who is in the room and who is listening. Another concern that I would have is the mental health status of all involved. Is this change going to negatively impact mental health?

What do you think about other solutions proposed by the class?

I think it is important to let others express their own thoughts and opinions. It is also important to acknowledge an individuals feelings and listen to feedback. My classmates in this discussion board have made great suggestions regarding conflict resolution strategies. I would be interested to find out if the principal in this situation listened to feedback from students and the class regarding this situation.

What would you change or improve about some of the other approaches to the situation?

Management that is inefficient when handling conflict can cause a negative environment and increase the stress levels of the individuals involved (Genc and Hamedoglu, 2012). I would ensure that there are training and professional development opportunities regarding conflict resolution are planned for all managers and employees. Managers need to lead by example and showcase their superb conflict resolution strategies. If there are managers that do not showcase these conflict resolution skills, it could lead to frustration within the organization and a variety of negative effects.
