Make sure you are reading Between the World and Me; even read ahead if you can. You need to understand his complex use of the word body which contains an analysis of history and economics, his stance on the Dream, and his inability to be patriotic in the ways Americans are expected to be patriotic.
Try to talk to family members about immigration, work, social status. Get an idea of your family history. In Zoom I talked about white men being conditioned for factory work through organized sports. We are learning about black bodies and how they fueled the rise of the US in Between the World and Me. Also the documentary 13th sheds light on modern-day exploitation of black bodies. I have a friend whose Chinese American ancestor 5 generations ago helped to build the railroads and was treated as disposable–Chinatowns in places close to home like Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Jose were burned to the ground. Some of your family members might be able to tell you about Operation Wetback, which created racist propaganda to push Mexican Americans out when no longer needed as a source of cheap labor. The list goes on. And women–it is clear that our bodies have been used and regulated to give birth.
Do some preliminary research. For this essay you will need one scholarly source and another source of your choice (documentary, article, an intelligent and well-researched blog, podcast). Find these two sources, get them approved, and actually read them. Studies show students only read the first paragraph of their research paper sources or something like that.
