According to conventional wisdom, precarious and substandard housing conditions in U.S. cities are just one of the many unfortunate effects of poverty. Matthew Desmond disagrees, arguing instead that eviction is a cause and not just a condition of poverty (Desmond, 2016, 299). Do you agree with Desmonds claim? Why or why not? Develop an argument (supported with a series of sub-arguments) that defends your position.
In supporting your sub-arguments, be sure to use specific empirical evidence collected from Matthew Desmonds book, Evicted (as well as other course readings and lectures). Outside research is not required but is happily accepted.
INSTRUCTIONS
Students should develop a thesis-driven argument that is systematically supported with specific examples and textual evidence taken from course readings (Required and Supplemental) and other course materials. No outside research is necessary.
Papers should be 5-6 pages long and standard formatting is expected (12-point font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced, etc.). In-text citations and a bibliography are required (as will be discussed in class). If you have a bibliographic style you are comfortable with (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), feel free to use it. If you are not familiar with how to construct a bibliography, please see the ASAs (American Sociological Associations) Short Style Guide (located in the last Canvas module). And be sure to let me know if you have any questions about the process (we will also be discussing it more in class).
