After reading Chapter 10, revisit the area 10-5a Graphic Rating Scales, and consider the following: Managers and supervisors are tasked with conducting performance appraisals on their subordinates (employees or direct reports). It is important to know how to use the forms that are used in the appraisal process. Organizations strive to improve employee behaviors so that work environments are healthy and match the mission or purpose of their business. For this discussion, you will evaluate a zookeeper. In general, think about why zoo’s exist, their purpose, their mission, and what they strive to achieve. Organizations that use Behavioral Rating Scales measure the people they employ by identifying important job dimensions. It is the people within an organization that make all the difference.
Step 1) Watch the Web Link – Video: Cute! What did panda do when zookeeper cleaning the leaves. (Yes, the title is fragmented, but this is how it is listed on YouTube)
Step 2) You are to assume that you are observing the zookeepers’ behavior. As the observer (supervisor), you want to ensure her behaviors are conducive to the culture of a highly ranked zoo.
Step 3) Complete the Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS) evaluation form in the attachment I have provided in this module. Be sure to fill out the ‘Overall appraisal findings’, using area 10-7 ‘Appraisal Feedback’ as your guide to the area of the form where you will provide feedback or note-taking (assuming you will have a one-on-one meeting about the appraisal with the zookeeper). This is part of Step 5.
Step 4) Copy (by highlighting the form with your mouse and cursor) and paste into an MS Word document – Include a header with your student name, date, and title of the assignment.
Step 5) In your first post, provide your Overall Appraisal Findings, what you think about the BARS form.Write about your observation. Explain how you rated the zookeeper and why. Make sure your rating and feedback are aligned so that your appraisal is accurate.
