HAVING into account the following texts we have been studyin in class, the topic for your Essay-Like Commentary will be as follows:
“Write an analytical survey of the Role of Religion in the History of Medieval English Literature based on the texts and authors we have studied”
Keys to your essay-like commentary: explore the different role of religion in the epic poetry of the anglosaxons (Beowulf) in contrast to the role of this religion in the three anglosaxon elegies; then move on considering the evolution of the religious viewpoint of the authors while shaping their religious views from an allegorical account (“The Dream of the Rood”) and continue exploring these similarities and differences in the use of the “allegory” in the following texts (Piers Plowman and Everyman), and try to differentiate the religious point of view and the religious purpose of these two texts from the late medieval times (Piers Plowman and Everyman), continuing with your study you should consider the major changes operated in the religious approach of the authors in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Prologue to the Canterbury Tales. You might even need to alter the order of your study as, for example, Piers Plowman is better connected with Geoffrey Chaucer according to the goal and intention of their respective authors. And, the Morality Play Everyman is more related to the times of Chaucer and William Langsland, but with a fairly differentiated approach which differs a great deal with Piers Plowman.
