+ The songs of the Civil Rights Movement, as presented in Sing for Freedom, are divided into two sections: the first is titled We Shall Overcome, and the first song of that section is We Shall Overcome. In the list of the songs that follow, the word Freedom appears in the titles more than any other word, and three songs in particular use it: Everybody Sing Freedom (18), Freedoms Comin and It Wont Be Long (40), and Im on My Way to the Freedom Land (62).
+ Examine the lyrics for each of the four songs listed above; then identify those lyrics that most emphasize the actions and goals of the Movement. For example, in We Shall Overcome, the lyrics state that the singers believe We are not afraid, We are not alone, The truth will make us free, Well walk hand in hand, The Lord will see us through, and they will be Black and white together. Their actions are to choose not to be afraid, The Lord is supporting their actions to protest and will see [them] through, and the goal is to end segregation and achieve integration of all people, to walk hand in hand, as Black and white together.
+ Go on to examine the lyrics of the remaining three songs to identify the actions and goals of the Movement.
+ Then notice that the second section of Sing for Freedom is titled, Freedom is a Constant Struggle. The lyrics of three songs in particular may identify the shift in the actions and goals of the Movement: I Aint Scared A Your Jail (136), Freedom Is a Constant Struggle (173), and I Been in the Storm So Long (202). Examine the lyrics of these three songs to identify the evidence that the struggle for freedom has become a constant struggle. Emphasize how the lyrics describe a shift in ideas from the songs of the first section of the book, We Shall Overcome, to the songs of the second section, Freedom is a Constant Struggle.
