Now that you have finished reading about the Elements of Design, you are ready to check your understanding. Analyze, in essay form, Marc Chagall’s painting, I and the Village, for each of the seven elements of art and design (LINE, SHAPE/MASS, LIGHT, COLOR, TEXTURE/PATTERN, SPACE, TIME/MOTION).
1. Double-space your essay, type in 12 point font size, and use a traditional font style. Ariel, Calibri, and Times New Roman are good choices.
2. Provide identifying information in the upper left corner of the first page. Include 1) name of the course, 2) name of the assignment, 3) instructor’s name, 4) your name, and 5) date.
3. Title your essay. Center it on the first page and capitalize the major words in the title.
4. Organize your essay to include the following:
a) Introduction: The first paragraph is an introductory paragraph where you will introduce the topic of your paper (thesis) which will be the elements of art and design, the title of the painting, and the name of the artist.
b) Body: The next several paragraphs make up the body of your essay. You may choose to designate one paragraph for each element. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the element you will then analyze.
c) Conclusion: The final paragraph of your essay is the conclusion. Here you will remind the reader of your thesis and summarize the major points of your essay previously discussed.
5. Write the essay in the third person objective. This is not a personal narrative and, therefore, you will not use personal pronouns. Personal pronouns include I, we, me, they, us, he, she…

2. Do not editorialize or use slang.
Do not write: Chagall brilliantly uses awesome and amazing colors to create his magnificent painting.
Do write: Chagall uses warm and cool color schemes in I and the Village.
3. When using the name of the artist, first introduce him using his full name–Marc Chagall. Each additional reference to the artist should use his last name only–Chagall.
Do not write: This essay will analyze the elements of art and design in the painting I and the Village by Chagall. Marc uses the elements line, shape and form, value, space, color, and time.
Do write: This essay will analyze the elements of art and design in Marc Chagall’s painting, I and the Village. Chagall uses the elements line, shape and form, value, space, and time.
6. Italicize (do not underline or bold type) the title of major works of art.
7. A Word About Plagiarism: This analysis is an application and assessment of your learning about the elements of art and design. It is to exclude any outside resources and consist solely of your own thoughts, ideas, and writing. Plagiarism in any form will result in a failing grade for the assignment. You will be graded on the completion, content, and accuracy of this assignment as it is a check to assess your level of understanding of the elements of art and design–think of it as practice. You will want to do well with it, however, the process will become part of your graded final art criticism essay.
