For your first essay, you will be asked to demonstrate that meaning can be found in unexpected places, including still photographs. You will need to develop a thesis that offers an interpretation of a photograph or photographs (depending on which option you pick) and support that thesis through analysis of the visual elements of your chosen photo(s).
Choose a single photograph to analyze and offer your interpretation of the photos meaning or significance. For example, we looked at how the photograph of the newspaper boy could be used to express the loneliness and danger young children faced before labor laws were introduced. Be sure you analyze the use of at least five visual elements if you choose this option.
Format: In order to ensure that everyone is responsible for the same amount of writing, I ask that you follow these guidelines for your paper: 4 to 6 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font. Use paragraph indents, and do not put any space between paragraphs. The paper must reach beyond the halfway point on page 4, or it will be considered incomplete. In the upper-left corner, put your name, class, and the assignment name (Visual Analysis Essay). Give the essay a unique title as well: this should be centered and in boldface. Please use normal margins (one inch all around) and left alignment. You do not need an additional title page or a Works Cited page for this assignment, but do include page numbers. Papers that do not meet the length requirements or that use spaces between paragraphs will be considered incomplete and will receive half credit.
I will attach the photo and the elements of the photo that you will analyze. If you feel like changing an element please run it by me first. You can change the thesis, it just provided a very vague one
