5-page paper, 12-point font, double-spaced, Times New Roman, Cambria, etc (just regular size font). Pages should be numbered on the upper right hand corner.Papers should include a cover page (not part of the 5 pages) that includes: your name, a title for the paper, and the class.
Papers should be submitted as a word doc or PDF. Not in pages. Images of the artworks should be included (or linked) these images should appear after your 5 pages of text they do not count towards 5 pages of essay text and should be labelled with information: artist, title, date, medium, museum collection.
Since we cannot go to a museum, we are going to virtually go to some of the best museums in the world. Students will explore museums via Google Arts & Culture. Students should explore the following museums (chosen because their collections include works or works by artists we have studied or will study). Be sure to explore these museums via the Explore: Museum View feature to see what the museum looks like. Additionally, look closely at some of the artworks included in their collections:
Uffizi Gallery
Van Gogh Museum
Tate Britain
Muse dOrsay
Rijksmuseum
Mauritshuis
Museo Dolores Olmedo
MFAH (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)
National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, DC)
As you will see on their website, there are many more museums, but I hoped to limit the museums to the first few scrolls and to not overwhelm you with museums. You are welcome to look at other museums – just make sure the collection is mostly works made after 1300 (when our class starts) as this is not always the case and make sure the museum has the museum views option. For example, a museum that focuses on classical antiquity is not acceptable.
After looking at the selected museums, you will choose 2 museums to focus your paper on. You will describe, to the best of your ability – I understand you are not able to go into the buildings the layout of each museum, what kinds of art works are in the museum (does the collection focus on one time period? One artist? One media?) and you should be specific about what kinds of works are in the museum (artist, title, date this info appears in a different section via Google Arts & Culture but on the same page).
Another question students may address is: What kind of statement is the museum trying to make – about the art within its building, how the art is hung, what kind of pieces are in its collection? Your essay should also include information about how these museums are similar or different.
Once you have selected the museums, you will choose one artwork from each museum included on the museums website which is of good digital quality. You will include in your paper formal analysis of each artwork within your paper. The artwork choice is up to the student, again, it must be from 1300 to contemporary art (the range of our class). The formal analysis of the artworks should be at least one page for each artwork of your paper (2 pages for 2 artworks). Formal analysis can be longer, but not shorter. Consider then how these artworks help to support your points about the kinds of arguments that museum is making.
Your paper should include cover page, 5 pages of essay text, and image page. Within the essay text, formal analysis for each artwork (2 total) should be, at minimum, one page (2 pages at minimum total for 2 artworks). The paper should then also address aspects of each museum addressed above in the instructions.
Note: If a museum view only features one room, you can use it just be careful to state in your essay how this one room appears (not every room may be the same in a museum).
This is not a research paper in that you are not expected to provide any outside research about the museum or artwork/artist. You are to visually analyze the information. If you do any outside research or include any information from the website, you must cite your sources (ideally, this is not an issue as you are not doing any outside research).
