PERSONAL STATEMENT Please provide a concise statement describing your interest, experiences, and influences in art, and your goals for studying art at UCLA.You will have 2200 characters (including spaces) / approximately 350 words My Draft: Art has activated the way I use my senses to experience the world. One year ago, I had a unique opportunity since I lived with my younger female cousin who is an artist , as I used her pigments to create my first self-portrait. Moreover, I still remember that during an afternoon that was originally very tranquil, each of the memories in my head transformed into colors. My brushstrokes that came into contact with my canvas started to spread across it, while my internal dialogue became clearer than ever before, making me extremely excited. From that point on, I knew that I must become an artist: An artists identity helped me understand my self-identity, while I was no longer a name, title, or role, but a form of existence as well as an individual who exists based on a collective identity. Subsequently, after a long period of time, I consistently created works related to my self-portrait. Moreover, I used my perspective of my Chinese family with whom I grew up to experience my original identity, while I used my individual and ethnic identity as well as the perspectives of Western and Eastern life experiences to discover my diverse identity and community. At the same time, modern artists further prompted me to explore my understanding of the concept of identity. Learning more about Judy Chicago, Janine Antoni, and Kehinde Wileys understanding of women, minorities, and marginalized cultures as they relate to the topic of identity inspired me to start using more wide-ranging perspectives to research my identity and the outcomes of my interactions with my environment – identity anxiety. In addition, I started using more wide-ranging perspectives to experience the identity anxiety that my environment produced. At the same time, I started researching artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Yin Xiuzhen who use diverse materials. These artists helped me understand the combination of materials and identity in a new way, and also enabled me to use a perspective based on a wider-ranging space and ecosystem to discuss the topic of my identity anxiety. It happened that during the pandemic, as peoples lives have become chaotic, humanity has started to re-think their attributes as well as location and circumstances in nature. Therefore, I reflected on the connection between nature and people to combine diverse natural and artificial materials to create my artwork XXXX. My dream has always been to attend UCLA to study art. This is because I firmly believe that the diversity and freedom of UCLAs Fine Art program can provide me with a platform to take creative risks while continuing to develop my focus on topics related to ecosystems and identity. UCLAs well-developed artistic atmosphere as well as its precious and cutting-edge artistic learning resources can help me choose different categories of advanced studio courses that will strengthen my specialized skills. Furthermore, I look forward to discussing and learning from many artists who have different cultural backgrounds and educational experience, as I hope to further explore the ingenious integration of natural materials and installation art. Moreover, UCLA is located in a culturally diverse neighborhood. Therefore, its superior geographical location can make it convenient for me to enhance my critical thinking related to cultural and social identity while also participating in purposeful in-depth research.
