I have to write a reflective piece about an intercultural encounter 400-700 Words.The encounter was as followsIt took place during the summer of 2008 in Majorca. It was my 2nd summer working on the island. I had been learning some Spanish casually since the previous year. One day I went to Palma on my day off and whilst I was there, I needed to top-up my mobile phone. I went into a newsagent there and said the standard hola greeting as I approached the counter. I continued speaking in Spanish and said the shopkeeper (who I would estimate was not that much older than I was [maybe 10 years]) that I wanted to put credit on my phone. The man replied to this in English and said What is your network The rest of the encounter continued in English. I chose this encounter as it shows how an unsuccessful encounter can have negative consequences as this made me feel less confident and not want to try communicating in Spanish again. Some reflection notes:Initially I found this very disheartening. I had spent time and effort trying to learn the language of the county I had been working with and when I attempt to use and communicate in that language to be spoken back to in English was a little rude and also very disheartening. It also knocked my confidence. For a while afterwards I was very reluctant to speak in Spanish.Now when I look back maybe there were several different reasons why this had happened. Did the man feel the need to practice his English or maybe he could tell from my accent that I was British and wanted to spare me the difficulty of trying to speak Spanish when he could perfectly communicate with me in my native language? Or was the shop usually due to having a high volume of customers so he felt the need to serve me quickly and efficiently in order to serve new customers arriving???
