Dear whomever it may concern,
I need a reading log for the novel Beloved, written by Toni Morrison.
The requirements are:
1. Use at least two quotations.
2. Show thinking about the ending.
Here is one direction that might help you:
“Analytic: This type of response uses a close reading and study of the selected passage to make observations about the work as a whole. You might consider things such as figurative language, style, tone, mood, diction, etc. The emphasis is analysis, evaluation and reflection.”
You may choose any topic if you must, but I HIGHLY prefer it if you could write about the messages conveyed on slavery. Below I have copied an excerpt that I wrote about the dehumanization part of slavery. You may use it, and you might also expand on the legacy of slavery. Just a suggestion.
While you may choose quotes from any section of the book, please keep in mind that I must “show thinking about the ending”. So I imagine you will use at least one quotation from the last chapter or so.
Finally, if you need more than 2 pages double spaced, please be my guest and go ahead. I am only asking that you write a minimum of 2 pages double spaced, but I will be happy if you write more to capture all your thoughts.
My assignment is not a formal essay, so it does not require an introduction, conclusion, and thesis. However, it is important that both (or more!) of my quotations are connected to a central theme.
If you need to contact me, please do so through email
Thank you very much, and I look forward to reading your original, professional work

One moment that underscored further how central dehumanization is to slavery is when Sethe, feeling guilt for stealing from Sawyer, recalled what happened when Sixo stole and ate a shoat from schoolteacher. Schoolteacher confronted Sixo, who tried to argue that what he did was not stealing. Clever his argument may have been, however it was not effective as schoolteacher beat him anyway to show him that definitions belong to the definers not the defined (Morrison, 225). This shows how for slavery in America, white people viewed themselves as supreme, the authority on all matters and thus have the right to be the thinkers. Whereas, their slaves are inferior and thus do not have any right to think. The ability to think and reason is one of the most vital aspects of human beings, and denying a person the agency to use their mind and speak effectively strips them of their humanity. Therefore, schoolteacher must punish Sixo for his use of logic to justify his treatment as a property and not as a human.
