Biblical Images of Salvation Essay

The student will complete a theological essay that will address the relationship of human sinfulness to an aspect of the doctrine of salvation. Students will examine ONE of the biblical images of salvation (adoption, conversion, regeneration, redemption, reconciliation, justification, election, sanctification, or glorification) and define and describe the doctrine with its biblical, historical and theological contours as well as discuss how this image of salvation relates to and addresses the problem of sin.

Finally, the student will apply the implications of this doctrine to the Christian life and for the students chosen vocation. The essay will be 800-1,000 word. See “Course Policies” for the formatting expectations for assignments in this course.

INCLUDE THE WORD COUNT IN YOUR PAPER (5-point automatic deduction if word count is not included). Also include a Title Page even if your writing style does not require one, as well as a bibliography or Reference List.

What do we mean by biblical, historical, and theological contours (outline or shape)?

-biblical What does the bible teach about this doctrine (do a quick survey of Old Testament and New Testament teachings; provide some verses or biblical references in parenthesis)

-historical What has been the historical development or views on this doctrine (Erickson deals with this at times, but you may need to do some outside research on this point: e.g. the concept of the Millennium changed after Augustin in the 4th century.)

-theological what are the theological contours, models or systems that interpret this doctrine (e.g., Calvinism vs. Arminianism; different views on sanctification, how is someone saved? etc.)

The distinction between the biblical and theological contours is this: You are to select a doctrine and quote or reference specific verses that relate to it. The theological model or system will then give the interpretation or models of these verses, thus establishing doctrinal teaching on teachings in the bible.

For example: Theological contours, models, or systems on the image of God would be: Functional View, Relational View, the Substantive View. So, for example, if one wanted to study human sin, one could follow Ericksons explanation of certain theological models as explained in chapter 22. On the millennium, one would discuss Amillennialism, Postmillennialism, and Premillennialism.

For this assignment, images of Salvation would include sub-topics such as: election, justification, conversion, sanctification, etc. Choose only one biblical image.

NOTE TO WRITER: First off, thank you so much. Second, whenever this refers to the ‘Bible’ Its talking about the christian bible. Third, this does not at all have to be incredibly theologically sound. I’d be happy as long as it sounds good and sounds like I tried. Thanks so much!
