Research Proposal Guidelines: A good research proposal should include:
A brief and meaningful title reflecting the nature of the research project.
An introduction outlines the research area background, its relevant context and a rationale for why the proposed research project is interesting and important. Students should also identify research problems and conclude the session with aims and objectives of the proposed research project.
A literature review identifies key prior studies in the area. This should demonstrate who the key researchers are, what has been said/done in the past and what is being currently said/done. Key theories in given research areas should be identified. This section can be concluded with more specific research questions or examples of research hypotheses/propositions.
A discussion of the proposed research method/s. Students need to explain the selected research approach and a brief rationale about it and justify sampling techniques, how data will be collected, collection tools and how data will be analysed in order to answer the proposed research questions.
A conclusion outlines ethical and practical issues, including resource constraints, access and data protection matters, possible ethical concerns (particularly if collecting primary data or analysing existing secondary data). If there are no such issues, then a brief statement noting this will be appropriate. You should also briefly consider implications and any limitations of the proposed research.
A realistic timetable, to demonstrate key milestones of the proposed research project.
A full list of references consulted to date, which have been referred to in the proposal (particularly in the introduction and literature review sections) using the Harvard system of referencing consistently.
