For your final research paper, you may choose and focus on any historical event, person, conflict, or topic in general that shaped the period known as the modern world as defined in our Marks’ textbook “Origins of the Modern World.” Your assignment is to learn as much as possible about your chosen subject and then analyze its historical, cultural, and/or environmental importance and significance to this era. Your final research paper should be between five (5) full pages in length and no longer than six (6) full pages in length not including your Works Cited page.
Develop an opening statement, usually referred to as a thesis statement about how the event, person, conflict, or topic provides insight into the developmental impact of modern world history, culture, and environment.
Your opening statement should be followed by several body paragraphs in which you will in your own words, narrate, paraphrase, use specific quotes and statistics (where applicable). This will REQUIRE you to use parenthetical citations in MLA style in order to avoid plagiarism. Any idea that IS NOT your own needs to have a citation behind it. For example: “Unlike Russia, Japan had few of the natural resources that an industrial economy needed, in particular coal and iron ore (Marks 138). A good habit to adopt – when in doubt – ALWAYS USE A CITATION.
NOTE: All submitted papers must contain parenthetical documentation within their respective body paragraphs and a correctly sourced Works Cited page. Your body paragraphs should be followed up by a one (1) to two (2) paragraph summary conclusion of your topic and what you learned or thought. Again, the entire paper should be no less than five (5) pages minimum and a maximum of six (6) pages in length, double spaced, and typed in 12 point font.
Your Works Cited page should contain the same number of sources (4) as your paper does. So, you will need a minimum of four (4) sources for your paper but can utilize up to six (6) sources if needed or applicable.
Example of a topic: your paper may want to address and research the impacts of the biological old regime and the significant role it played in the development of China and the consequences of it not only on the people, but economically, socially, and environmentally. Or, you could look at the rise of the British Empire and it’s influence on colonialism, both in the United States and later, in India. Your assignment is to learn as much as possible about your topic and then analyze its historical, cultural, and environmental significance to the shaping of the modern world as we have studied this semester.
