Recent studies examined the inclusion of training around LGBT health care revealed a lack of training in nursing school (Damaskos et al., 2018, p.33). In my nursing school the director of nursing was a gay gentleman and he made it very clear at the orientation that discrimination against different sexual beliefs was prohibited. Even at my new hire orientation at the University of Miami the human resource department stressed the importance of acceptance among different sexual beliefs. At the University of Miami, they even have an LGBT student center that strives to foster the inclusion of the LGBT community and supports all students and staff. I feel this special population was addressed and incorporated support networks used by patients, students and staff in the community. The training provided quality care in a welcoming manner that was non-judgmental. One factor that I feel should be incorporated to improve acceptance of this special population is to add a section for sexual orientation on new patient questionnaires. This in turn will help this population to feel welcome. Many people in the video stated they did not have that option at facilities they have went to. This made lesbian women and gay men feel discriminated against like nothing applied to them. As a result of what I am learning this week I will offer initial steps on how to improve the quality of care provided to LGBT patients. According to Fowler (2015a), as nurses it is our duty to create an ethical environment and implement a culture of civility and kindness treating colleagues, coworkers, employees, students, and others with dignity and respect regardless of their sexual preference”
