I selected the topic of organ transplantation to candidates with substance abuse disorder. The topic of organ transplant to patients with substance abuse issues raises controversy for many reasons. There are concerns surrounding the lack of available organs, increased risk of rejection and discrimination concerning self-imposed damage. Clinical practitioners and insurance providers are reluctant when considering risks associated with relapse in this population versus candidates who suffer from acute injury or organ failure. This topic is a global health issue due to the current opioid epidemic and the scarcity of organs available for transplant.
