Do Students Need an Academic Bill of Rights?
Have you ever been forced to hear professors express their views on political or social issues, whether they were relevant to the class or not? Students and parents who feel that professors have turned their lecterns into soapboxes are fighting back. At Students for Academic Freedom you can read the Academic Bill of Rights (ABR), a set of principles this group would like to see enforced in all colleges and universities.
Supporters of the ABR argue that it protects students from being the captive audience of a professor’s political views. Opponents of the ABR argue that it has nothing to do with academic freedom; rather, it is a tool conservative groups can use to suppress any views they don’t like.
To complete the assignment below, you’ll take a stance on whether or not students need an academic bill of rights. Here are three suggestions to help you craft your argument:
Organize logically. You might organize your reasons for and/or against an academic bill of rights from most to least important.
Develop your ideas. Provide specific details to help us visualize your classroom experiences and explain what you were thinking or feeling at the time.
Don’t over generalize. Be careful not to let one or two instances speak for your entire school experience. Use words like may, sometimes, or could to modify your general points and make them better match your evidence.
Assignment
Read the bill for yourself. You can read the bill here: Wikipedia ABR Overview Then, draw on your own experiences in high school and college classrooms to answer the question “Do students need an academic bill of rights?” In 200-500 words, state a claim and offer three reasons (one logical, one emotional, and one credible) to support your claim. Then, state what the opposition would argue and offer a brief refutation to their view.
