DESCRIPTION
This is a research paper on the issues that students face here in the United States and/or abroad. You will be asked to choose one level of education (Community College, Undergraduate Education, or Graduate Education). You will discuss topics that affects the everyday lives of students, such as incarceration, immigration, food insecurities, homelessness, racism, etc. For this paper you will need to read THREE research articles on the topic for your choice. Your job is to summarize each article and reflect on the state of the student who are experiencing these conditions. You will also be asked to provide a student-centered solution these are solutions that can be applied in the academic setting to support students.
Basic Requirements: 4-6 pages, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point font, use of subheadings, use of I writing voice
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
This paper requires that you demonstrate understanding 3 academic journal articles. What this also means is that you will need to read more than three to find your final three that you will use in the paper. Your final three articles must be a good fit with your topic and be appropriate for the study of education. Do not pick the first three that you come across. This paper is 4-6 pages long, so pick articles that will allow you to have plenty to write about.
Choose a topic that has been written enough about. Stay away from obscure or unique circumstances that affect students everyday lives. Examples of past student papers: incarceration and education, child abuse and education, and much more! Remember these topics should be related to how they affect students in their academic settings. As mentioned above, you will need to have plenty of information to write about. If you are not sure, email me your ideas.
SUGGESTED STRUCTURE FOR THE PAPER
I. Introduction (1-2 paragraph/half a page)
Tell the reader what the paper is about and why its an important topic to explore. (Tip: Often it can be helpful to write this section last, once you have written at least one draft.) Make sure that your introduction is strong, as it is a guide for the reader. You should have a thesis statement at the end of your introduction paragraph. You will lose points for not including it.
II. The Research Studies (5 paragraph minimum/roughly 2-3 pages)
The first paragraph should briefly introduce what the three studies and how they relate to your topic. Then, use subheadings to summarize each article; there should be three subheadings. Be sure to use your I voice to discuss the main findings, what you think the researchers missed, what you liked about the research study, and what you think could have been improved (e.g., adding certain populations, using a different or additional research method). Be sure to discuss explicitly how students everyday lives are affected. The conclusion subsection should reflect on what you have learned from these studies; this will also serve as a way to transition to the next section.
III. Student-Centered Solutions (2-3 paragraphs minimum/1-2 pages)
Identify 1 example of students creating solutions for themselves or for other students. The internet and media may have examples. These solutions should be inspired directly from your discussion in the previous section. You will then create your own student-centered solution. Your own solution can be an extension of something that is already happening, but you will make it better. Or it can be a completely new solution.
IV. Conclusion (1 paragraph/half a page)
This last section should reflect on the paper overall What did you learn? What do you want to know more about? You should also use our course material here to reflect on the role of Sociology in understanding students everyday lives. Be sure to cite the concepts and ideas properly . If you can incorporate what you have learned thus far. This is a great opportunity to add what you learned this semester to your topic, if relevant, of course.
