In what ways has this social issue been historically a concern?

Using one of our focus essays this week and by using the 12 Grand Social Challenges site as a launching point, explore a social issue that you believe needs to be addressed. Youll be writing a problem and solution essay about this issue. Make a claim in your thesis and then in the essay discuss why you are making this claim, what are the causes, and what you wish to propose about combating the social issue and problem you’re exploring.

You will do research, use documentaries, draw upon your own experience and/or interview someone to get a better understanding of the social issue and the challenges that any group or groups it highlights face. Tip: choose something youre interested in because well be spending a lot of time with it.

Your essay will explore two parts: first, the problem and second, the solution. Later on, I will pass out a recommended format, which has suggestions for each paragraph. In general, you will follow this format:

First you will research and write about the problem

– In what ways has this social issue been historically a concern? What lead to the creation of the issue and how has it played out over time? Have there been laws that purposefully (or accidentally) attempted to fix or make it worse? Are there any bias/stereotypes played out institutionally or systemically from groups in power cornering this social issue or the groups effected by this issue?
– What are some of the stereotypes or automatic, default associations about this social issue?
– What is the larger scale, institutional effect of this social issue if it goes unmanaged cared for?

Second, you will research solutions or innovations, approaches and/or laws that combat, or attempt to combat, these biases and stereotypes.

– What are the solutions that people (government, cities, non profits, schools, etc.) have come up with historically? How have they worked or not?
– If you cant find any solutions or approaches, (or even if you do), you can suggest some. Big solutions examples: affirmative action laws, health insurance for children Smaller solutions examples protests, campus groups.
Note: dont get too hung up on the term solution. Solving an issue like systemic discrimination and child poverty is neither simple nor easy. Instead, think of this as identifying approaches to combat these views on marginalized groups.

Minimum standards for complete are:

– Your essay should be between 6-9 pages of text, Standard MLA.
– Correct and appropriate MLA in-text citations and Works Cited page
– References to at least five different sources, two of which is from scholarly journals. The rest of the sources should be credible, but do not need to be from scholarly/academic journals.
– Use direct quotes and paraphrases where appropriate. A balance is good.
– A clear, nuanced understanding of the problem and thoughtful, creative solutions.
– Follow the format of a problem / solution essay.
– Include paragraphs concerning a counter argument and acknowledge why this social issue has been ignored, or why this social issue has persisted.
– Meet all other aspects of the minimum standards rubric.

For A level, in addition to the above:

– References to at least six different sources, three of which is from scholarly journals and peer reviewed. The rest of the sources should be credible, but do not need to be from scholarly/academic journals.
– 7 full pages
– Meet all other aspects of the A standards rubric, including sophisticated use of texts and sophisticated style and language.

Explain how the small appliance you have selected supports Company Gs mission statement provided in the scenario.

SCENARIO
Company G is a well-established firm that is highly regarded in the electronics market. Its mission statement is as follows:

We enable consumers to improve the quality and convenience of their lives by providing high-quality, innovative electronic solutions.

Company Gs engineers and designers have developed a line of small appliances that the company feels can be very successful in the small-appliance market. The company feels that the current marketing plan for its products does not put them in a position to reach the profit potential for the small appliances.

Success with the new line will depend upon an accurate assessment of the market and a well-crafted, effectively implemented marketing plan that will fit the current market.

As the marketing manager, you are charged with the responsibility of developing a new marketing plan that will enable the company to reach the full profit potential of one small appliance from the new product line.

The president has suggested that you use the clean sheet of paper concept as you develop the plan; therefore, during the time you are creating the new plan, all details of the companys existing electronics marketing plan are to be considered irrelevant. The intent is that current strategies, practices, etc., will be considered for relevance and possible continuance only after your new plan has been presented to and is understood by top management.

Company Gs team of engineers and designers have developed a line of top-quality small appliances, and through concept and prototype testing, they have shown that the visual design features are very appealing to potential buyers and give a distinct impression associated with quality and artistic elegance. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the new products may be the most reliable line of products in the small-appliance industry. Additionally, the team has designed a production process that is very efficient in terms of labor and production-line time and that will result in very little raw materials waste. The combination of these efficiencies and the relatively small front-end investment for this line will result in the companys ability to produce each of the products in the line at a cost that should enable them to emerge as the lowest-cost producer in the small-appliance industry.

Company G has a low debt-to-equity ratio and a high credit rating. It enjoys excellent relationships with current suppliers, but because of differences in material requirements, new raw material suppliers will be needed to support the small appliance line. Company G will also need new suppliers for two component parts that will be purchased ready for assembly into some of the small appliances.

The credit terms Company G offers to intermediaries in their distribution channel are typical for their industry. Marketing research has shown that the companys brand and logo are readily recognized by most categories of electronics product consumers.
REQUIREMENTS
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. An originality report is provided when you submit your task that can be used as a guide.

You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

Prepare a one-year marketing plan (suggested length of 57 single-spaced pages) using the attached Company G One-Year Marketing Plan Template for one of the small appliances from the new line.
