It seems like a large part of the United States (both private and government) is owned at least partially by foreign companies and foreign governments.
But what about foreign ownership in other parts of the world?
In completing this Research Task, students will discover interesting information about the top 100 non-financial TNC’s from developing and transition economies, ranked by foreign assets.
This is just a snapshot of what is going on all over the world, but students will begin to see how globalized FDI has become.
In Module 2, students were introduced to the globalEDGE web site. They will use this site now, specifically to review UNCTAD’s annual World Investment Report.
Each year´s Report covers the latest trends in foreign direct investment around the world.
To prepare for this written assignment, you will need to:
Read Chapter 8 of the text. Go to the globalEDGE web site at globalEDGE
In the search engine type in World Investment Reports (WIR).
Click on the 2014 WIR (it will be the 285 page document).
For the exercise, you will also need the Annex Tables (specifically table 29) at the bottom of the WIR page.
You will be doing Exercise 1 under “Global Edge” in Chapter 8 of your textbook.
Based on the World Investment Reports web site, create a one page paper with a list of the top 10 nonfinancial transnational corporations from the developing world. Please refer to Chart/Table 29. Provide a summary of the countries and industries represented. Indicate if you notice any common traits from your analysis.
The list and summary can be incorporated into a Word table supplemented by a narrative analysis of the common traits you noticed.

International Business

What is a practical application of foreign exchange rate forecasting?
In completing this Management Decision students will, in effect, be making the kind of decision that international business managers make all the time. They will practice thinking and acting as an international business manager.
Students will find that basic computer literacy is a must in business, because in this day and age, no one can be successful in business (domestic or international) unless he or she knows how to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint, e-mail effectively, and navigate the Web.

In effect, this is a math question. It is a ‘do now’ or ‘do later’ decision. At play is the foreign exchange rate today for the U.S. Dollar to the Japanese Yen compared to the forecasted rate in the future. Also at play is the interest rate you would need to pay if you wished to postpone the conversion of dollars to yen.
How much is 400K yen worth in dollars today? How much is it worth 6 months from now? How much would I pay in interest if I had to wait?
Study and then answer Question 4 (and only Question 4) in chapter 10 of the text.
To facilitate your response, you could use Excel (which is the most common analytical tool used by international business persons all around the world – a U.S. export). Whether or not you use Excel, you must support you answer by showing the math which lead you to that course of action.
To create this assignment, first read Chapter 10 in the text.
You will prepare a two-page Management Decision paper answering the above question. The concepts will be constructed from the textbook (there are concrete answers). The implications will include your own opinions based on what you have read and analyzed.
Your instructor will look for clear analysis, valid conclusions and solid recommendations for each decision and implication.
When ready to turn-in your Management Decision, please attach your Word and or Excel file(s) by clicking the Add Attachments button, and then the Submit button.

International Business M5

What are the various forms of market entry strategies and when would you employ them? In making this Management Decision you will be able to identify and apply the many choices of strategic options available to managers seeking to sell their products or services in foreign countries.
1. When a company makes a product, ships it to England and sells it there, this is an export (it brings money into the United States). Now the same company can open a factory in England, making and selling the products there. The money sent back to the U.S. is an export. Also, when the same company decides to pay a British factory to make the product for them and then sell it there in England, the money sent to the U.S. is defined as an export.
When a U.S. company sells a franchise to a British company, the money sent back each month to the U.S. is an export.
When a British person takes a vacation in New York City, paying money for hotels, meals, Broadway shows, etc… this too is an export since it is bringing money into the U.S.
________________________________________
Think about the information you learned from Chapter 15.
You may also wish to explore the following U.S. Government web site. The U.S. Commercial Service is the part of the U.S. Department of Commerce which promotes U.S. exports. Many states (for example California) have their own programs specifically promoting exports from their states. U.S. COMMERCIAL SERVICE
Explain when you would employ the following market entry strategies (all of which are a different form of exporting since each strategy brings money into the U.S.):
1. Direct Exporting
2. Turn-key projects
3. Licensing
4. Franchising
5. Joint Ventures
6. Wholly Owned Subsidiaries
For the market entry strategies, specific examples that synthesize AND extend the text with additional evidence will receive the full percent evaluation mark.

Case Study Banks of China

Text: International Business—Competing in the Global Market
By: Charles W. L. Hill

How can companies obtain the working capital (money) they need to sustain their operations and fund their growth?
1. The financial crisis and worldwide recessions of 2002 and 2008 abruptly halted a nearly three-decade-long expansion of global capital markets. After nearly quadrupling in size relative to GDP since 1980, world financial assets—including equities, private and public debt, and bank deposits—fell by $16 trillion last year to close at $178 trillion in 2008, the largest setback on record.
Who are the main players in a generic, capital market? Walk through the market players. Generic Capital Market Players.
By completing this Case Analysis you will be able to identify the many choices available to managers seeking financing for their organizations.
________________________________________
As the basis for the Case Analysis:

1. Read Chapter 12 of the text.
2. Then study and reflect on the Closing Case, “Industrial Commercial Bank of China.”

Servant Leadership

Servant Leadership is measured on a variety of dimensions, such as behavior, ethics, empowerment, and putting subordinates first. These dimensions can be more fully developed in leaders who have integrity and strong ethics. Servant Leadership is frequently the foundation for corporate leader training and the first step in this training is often assessing where you stand on each of the dimensions.
To prepare for this Assignment, go to the “Servant Leadership Questionnaire” in the course text, Leadership: Theory and Practice . The instructions in the course text ask you to have two other people who know you to take the test and respond about you. Instead, for this Assignment, you are the only one who needs to know your score, so there is no reason to ask anyone else to take the test. Take the survey and be as honest and objective as you can. Keep your scores for analysis in the Final Research Paper.
Write a 1- to 2-page paper describing your experience with the “Servant Leadership Questionnaire.” Analyze how your questionnaire responses indicate your personal leadership philosophy. Describe any questionnaire results that may have surprised you. Analyze the impact that the characteristics of Servant Leadership might have on your personal leadership style. Explain how Servant Leadership might help you become a more effective leader.
Submit your paper by Day 7.

Authentic Leadership and Team Leadership

Authentic Leadership is a relatively new leadership approach and as a result much more research is needed. There is no standard, accepted definition of Authentic Leadership but it can best be described as transparent, responsible to people’s needs, and adhering to a moral code. It is becoming more popular as a response to leadership failures in both the private and public sectors.
Teams have become more of a fixture in both the public and private sectors, and as a result, there is a greater interest in Team Leadership. Team Leadership posits that the critical function of leadership is to oversee the group, identify the problems, and take appropriate action. Team leadership is popular because it identifies the functions that a leader can share within the team.
For this Discussion, reflect on the leadership approaches or theories you have discussed throughout this course, select one of the approaches or theories that appeals to you. Consider the characteristics of your selected approach or theory. Consider the characteristics of Authentic Leadership and of Team Leadership. .
Post by Day 3 a description of the approach or theory you selected. Compare the characteristics of the approach or theory you selected to those of Authentic Leadership and Team Leadership. Using your own experience, share an example of a situation that demonstrates this relationship. Describe the impact of that relationship. Use an example from your personal experience with this type of leadership or one from the Learning Resources..
Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.
Respond by Day 5 to at least one of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a probing question.
Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
Offer and support an opinion.
Validate an idea with your own experience.
Make a suggestion.
Expand on your colleague’s posting.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.
