Should Covid-19 Vaccines be Mandatory for students?

The Research Position Paper is the culminating essay of the research project. In the Issue Proposal, you began to develop your understanding of a controversial issue and consider how to answer the “So what?” and “Who Cares?” questions. The Annotated Bibliography allowed you to research multiple perspectives on your chosen issue and analyze these viewpoints in relation to your owns view. These assignments work together to support your final two texts in the Research Project – the Research Position Paper and the Research Position Paper Presentation.

In this essay, you will take a position on a controversial issue and developed a convincing argument based on credible evidence from scholarly research. Your argument will advance the existing conversation on this issue. Remember, you are writing about the same issue for the entire research project. If you wish you change your topic, you must rewrite all documents in the project.

Developing Your Argument

The basic structure of the research paper should include these components:

Introduction – Present the issue to your audience. Answer to “so what?” and “who cares?” questions by explaining why this issue is significant and why your audience should take an interest in it. Explain the controversy surrounding the issue and objectively address the differing points of view on this topic. End the introduction by introducing your own position on the issue (thesis statement).

Thesis Statement – Provide a thesis statement that clearly explains your position on the issue. The thesis statement must be arguable, significant, and specific. You claim should advance the conversation on this issue.

Supporting reasons and evidence – The central claim should be supported by convincing reasons and evidence. Reasons should include rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos). Credible evidence from academic sources should be used to support reasons and convince readers to accept your claim. Utilize the lessons from They Say / I Say to seamlessly integrate sources by introducing and explaining them appropriately.

Counterargument / Rebuttal – As this is a controversial issue with multiple viewpoints, the essay should anticipate counterarguments and address them fairly. Make concessions when necessary while maintaining the integrity of your argument.

Conclusion – Synthesize the paper’s central ideas for the reader. Reaffirm your argument without repeating what has already been stated in the introduction. New arguments should not be introduced in the conclusion. Leave the reader with a clear understanding of your argument and how it fits in to the overall issue.

Evaluation Criteria:

identifies an arguable/controversial issue appropriate to the assignment
provides an introduction that addresses the rhetorical situation and answers the “so what?” and “who cares?” questions
includes a thesis statement that is arguable, specific and significant and advances the conversation on the present issue
develops well-supported reasons to support the thesis statement
supports reasons with credible evidence from a variety of research
addresses counterarguments fairly and effectively
use sources effectively (15-20% of the essay should be from outside sources) and integrates them appropriately
cites sources correctly, both in-text and on the Works Cited page in MLA style
constructs a logically structured, well-organized, coherent argument
sentences are lively, engaging, and relatively error-free
essay is 5-7 FULL pages, in MLA style (12 pt. TimesNewRoman font, 1″ margins on all sides, double spaced, etc.) with a Works Cited page.

Does it offer unique insights or alternative information about the event/period/figure?

Please read the attached document on Marco Polo and then using your knowledge of the reading, apply the below instructions to the essay.

Try to answer the following questions:

Factual content
Who wrote it?
When and where was it written?
What type of document is it? (genre)
Who was the intended audience?
What is the authors point of view?
What background factors might influence the author?
Any misrepresentations or exaggerations?
Significance
Does it offer unique insights or alternative information about the event/period/figure?
What kind of conclusion can we draw?
The last part should be the most important discussion in your paper. What can we learn by reading this document?

Treat this as a regular 5(6?)-paragraph essay. Present your thesis in the opening paragraph, use a topic sentence for each body paragraph, and close your paper with a comprehensive conclusion.

MARKET STRUCTURE AND GAME THEORY

As always, make sure to thoroughly review the required background materials before starting the assignments. The assignment questions will require you to do some calculations and also apply the concepts from the module. Question 3 differs from previous assignments in that you have to use an online simulation tool; but this activity should be a fun break from the standard numerical problems you have been doing.

Case Assignment
For this problem use the Herfindahl Index to compute market concentration:
Suppose Apple has 45% of the U.S. market share for smartphones, followed by Samsung with 30%, LG with 9%, Motorola with 8%, HTC with 6%, and Nokia with 2%. What is the Herfindahl Index for the smartphone industry based on these numbers? Based on the Herfindahl Index, do you think the government would be willing to approve a merger between Apple and Samsung?
Now suppose Nokia and Motorola come out with a new smartphone that takes away a huge chunk of market share from Apple and Samsung. The new market shares are 25% for Apple, 20% for Samsung, 20% for Motorola, 20% for Nokia, 10% for LG, and 5% for HTC.
Use what you learned about perfect competition, monopoly, and oligopoly to answer these questions:
In the table below is the quantity produced, the price, the fixed costs, and variable costs for a perfectly competitive firm that faces a constant price of $150 for its product regardless of the quantity it sells. Use the information in the first four columns to calculate the number for the last four columns. At what quantity should they produce based on what you find with your results?
How do you think your answer might change if it became a monopolist with all of its competitors leaving the market? Or if it became an oligopoly with only one or two competitors?

Youve read about the prisoners dilemma in the background readings. Suppose you are a business owner with just one main competitor. If neither you nor your competitor cut your prices, you will both be more profitable. However, if your competitor lowers its prices and you keep your prices high, then you will lose all of your sales to your competitor. Every month you and your competitor place advertisements in the local newspaper with your price so you need to decide each month whether or not to keep prices high, or lower them based on what you think your competitor might do.

Go to the following webpage and test out some of your potential price strategies:
http://www.gametheory.net/Mike/applets/PDilemma/Pdilemma.html

The strategy defect indicates lowering your prices. The strategy cooperate means keep prices the same. Try out different strategies, such as cooperating all the time or defecting sometimes. There are five different rounds of this game, each with a competitor with different personalities and different strategies. Play all five rounds and experiment with different strategic approaches. Report your scores for each round, and discuss which strategies seemed to work the best for you.
Assignment Expectations
Answer the assignment questions directly.
Stay focused on the precise assignment questions. Do not go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.
For computational problems, make sure to show your work and explain your steps.
For short answer/short essay questions make sure to reference your sources of information with both a bibliography and in-text citations. See the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper, including pages 11-14 on in-text citations. Another resource is the Writing Style Guide, which is found under My Resources in the TLC Portal.

Reflect on the statement above both from individual and public health views. Do you agree? Why or why not?

To a large extent, factors such as where we live, the state of our environment, genetics, our income and education level, and our relationships with friends and family all have considerable impacts on health, whereas the more commonly considered factors such as access and use of healthcare services often have less of an impact (World Health Organization, 2015).

Reflect on the statement above both from individual and public health views. Do you agree? Why or why not? Considering the history, philosophy and values in public health, how does this influence your approach to improving health of the population? Building on the learning resources and your own research, what recommendations would you have for improving equality and equity in healthcare?
