The four Gospels sometimes describe the same events in the life of Christ, but differ in the description of those events. That this happened in the writing of the Gospels should not come as a surprise since eye witness accounts of the same event vary based on the point of view of the individual observing it. When we report what we see take place we also tend to tailor our recollections according to our audience.

Consider the birth of Christ as reported in Matthew 1:18-2:12 and Luke 2:8-40. Our observance of Christmas combines these events as if they occurred on the same night? But what evidence in these accounts of Christ’s birth would suggest otherwise? Is there a danger in telling historical events differently than the way they unfolded? If yes, what would those dangers be? If no, why not?
