Censorship Writing AssignmentAfter considering the material on Censorship and hate speech as well as the article on the Spanish government you will now formulate an argument for or against censoring speech on social media. Too often we want to have certain opinions shut down and barred from public discourse but somehow this seems to mirror what the Spanish government was trying to do. They did not like hearing criticism of the way they governed and decided it needed to be punished and shut down. For this assignment you may pair up with another individual to write this, you do not have to, and decide if speech should be censored and if it should, why or what things should be censored. You can also make the case for why hate speech should be protected and the reasons for that position.As you do this, I want you to consider the opposition to your argument. Meaning that you really consider arguments or ideas that oppose your position and carefully adjust your argument to show that you have considered these and know how to counter them. You will need to state their argument as they would present it, no strawman, and then your reasons for why offensive speech should be or should not be muted.I would really like you to consider also that there are many schools that claim they are diverse and enjoy diverse opinions but recently have stopped having speakers with diverse opinions at their colleges due to students calling it hate speech and protesting.Given the push to stifle hate speech, I am asking that you make the case for why it should be, if you think it should, and if you think the view point should be heard, then arguments provided which refute that viewpoint.I quite frankly never care which side you fall on. I do care that you have a clear claim, reasons that support the claim, that you have recognized and fairly laid out the argument for your opposition and then have a reasoned response to that.Critical thinking is not be telling you or coercing you to think my way with grades, but rather it is a well-reasoned argument that shows you have really considered all the evidence and problems and then made a decision regarding that.Again, you can write this with a partner, but you are under no obligation to do so.
