Case Analysis – Introduction to Communication (CMN 101)
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to give students an opportunity to apply a concept or concepts from the class textbook and lecture to an actual communication situation or experience.
Details: To successfully complete this assignment students must do the following: 1) select a concept or two related concepts from the textbook that you would like to learn more about. You should not pick more than two concepts. 2) Find an example of a real communication situation from the news, a movie, a video, etc., that serves an example of the concept you selected, 3) write a paper that shows how the situation you selected is an example of the concept and critically analyze both the concept and the situation in a 4 page paper.
Your paper should contain the following components that meet the criteria discussed below. Your paper should engagingly introduce the topic to be explored (0.5 pgs). Your paper should have a section that explains the concept you have selected in your own words. You may cite the textbook. You must incorporate one additional source that is academic in nature (a book, a journal article, an academic encyclopedia (this does not include Wikipedia!)). This section should be about 1 page. Your paper should have a section that summarizes the key points of the communication situation you have selected. Set the scene and summarize for the reader. Who are the key players/characters? What is happening in the example that is relevant? Mention any communication dynamics that impact the situation. (0.5-1 page). Next, comes the most important section of the paper, the analysis. In the analysis section, you should use the concept you selected to explain the situation you have just described. How is the concept at play, or a central concern of the scenario you have selected. You should aim to analyze the scenario in detail from multiple angles. Use the concept to fully explain the scenario and use the scenario to illustrate multiple aspects of the concept (1.5-2 pgs). Finally, your paper should have a short conclusion (<0.5 page)

Grading Criteria: 1) Your paper will be graded on your ability to construct a well-written and error free paper. Do not underestimate the importance of editing and proofreading your work. 2) Your ability to adequately and correctly explain the concept you selected. 3) Your ability to critically analyze your chosen scenario and correctly apply the concept to the situation. 4) Your ability to choose a scenario and a concept that fit well together and provide interesting insights and detailed analysis. 5) Your ability to follow the directions of this assignment. Cite your sources properly and follow APA writing and formatting guidelines.
