Choose a topic youd like to investigate that is a specific issue within the general topics of business ethics; global economic ethics; and capital punishment.

The case study paper for THL 216 provides an opportunity for students to do more in-depth research, analysis, and writing on one of the cases that weve studied so far. Your paper should be 5-7 pages in length. This assignment provides guidelines for students as they research and complete their papers.

Your first task is to find a topic. Here are some guidelines and suggestions:

Choose a topic youd like to investigate that is a specific issue within the general topics of business ethics; global economic ethics; and capital punishment.

DO NOT do a paper on business ethics, or global economic ethics, or capital punishment. Find a specific issue within those broader topics. For example, you could look at racial inequities in death penalty sentencing. Or you could look at the ethics of accounting or consumer protection in industry.

Find an article related to your topic using the research tools available through the Hackelmeier Library page on the Marian website (https://www.marian.edu/current-students/library). Do NOT use Google. Remember that you are looking only at articles that have scholarly content. However, for current cases, reputable news sources are allowed. If you need guidance on how to get started with your research or help discerning what qualifies as scholarly content, contact me.

You might also want to look at the EndNotes section after each chapter in Zalot & Guevin and the Additional Resources sections of Stivers to find a topic.

Then, using the foundations for moral theology that we have studied, analyze your topic from the perspective of the principles of moral theology. Use materials from the class or do some additional research on the principle.

Once you have found your topic, read the article youve selected and think about which foundational principles you are going to use (e.g. biblical/theological principles or Catholic Social Teaching principles), then follow the steps below in thinking through and crafting your paper.

Guidelines for your paper

What is the moral issue you are examining? This is the problem you are investigating.

What is going on in the case you are evaluating? What are some relevant facts to be considered? This section is where you provide background on the problem you are addressing.

What principles of moral theology are relevant to this issue and helpful in resolving it? Explain the biblical or theological foundations of the principle and then explain how the principle(s) apply to your issue. This is the methodology you are using to resolve the issue.

The above guideline is where I am looking for you to demonstrate your theological literacy and that you are able to employ theological resources and methods in a paper.

Summarize the problem and state how you would resolve this issue in light of principles of moral theology.

General Guidelines

The usual expectations with regard to written work are in force. If you use information from any of our textbooks or readings or from other sources, you must PARAPHRASE and you must cite the source from which you have paraphrased using MLA style. All quotes from the texts or other sources must be cited and a works cited list or bibliography must be included or you are at risk of receiving a ZERO (0) on this assignment. That means using quotation marks when needed, paraphrasing as appropriate, and providing citations (including page numbers) in the body of the text and a REFERENCE/WORKS CITED list at the end. You do not need quotation marks when you paraphrase but you must cite the source. You must cite all ideas that come from the authors of any materials you use not just quotes from the text. If ideas and quotes come from the same page, you can put the citation at the end of the paragraph.
