Choose one of the prompts above (yes, you have to choose one of the above; no, you cannot write on another topic). Research into the issue and use the information in order to come to and support your argument on the topic. This should be a persuasive argumentative essay using and analyzing textual and other evidence, and not a personal narrative, though your personal experience could be used (particularly in the introduction or conclusion) in addition to textual evidence as support.
You will need to use at least 7 academic sources in your MLA-formatted essay. At least 2 sources need to be books. At least 3 need to come from peer-reviewed journals (that you’d get from the databases). You could use more books or peer-reviewed journals, but that is the minimum for those sorts of resources. Of course, articles from reputable websites and magazines also count, as do textbooks, as do reputable documentaries and interviews. To get to 7 good sources, you likely need to research through about 20 good sources, which means you need to dig through many more than that to get to those 20 and then those 7, right?
Remember, this is not a stream-of-consciousness narrative in which you discuss your feelings about the issue. Leave that for Facebook people. This is a research-based opinion/argument, using all the skills and techniques you have learned about and incorporated this semester. Your educated opinion will come from your substantial research. You do not have all the answers yet. In fact, you likely do not have an intellectual opinion on your topic, yet, though of course you have an initial opinion. Research may lead to support or strengthen elements of ideas or concepts you already agreed with or thought, sure, but it should also enrich your starting ideas about the depth of the facts and stakes of the issue. And each point you make needs to be supported with details such as quotes, explanations, data, facts, etc., and then explained/tied back. Also, remember, you are using the prompts as a springboard to your own opinion on the topic. You are not per say responding to the quotes.
Humility is an important element of becoming educated the ability to say are not an expert or not deeply educated on a topic, but that you are willing to do research, is a starting point. And being willing to have your initial opinions evolve or change in the face of evidence is important, as well. This assignment will also help on that front.
