Your research project in this course will give you the opportunity to examine several different parts of your communication in depth.
Research Project 3 Communication in Media
For this third section of data collection & analysis of this paper, you will examine an example of media that is particularly interesting/important to you. You can choose a feature film, episode of a television show, episode of a podcast, song/album, graphic novel, or magazine. You will then analyze the media, looking for communication concepts. You should take some notes as you conduct your analysis. (What examples do you see, etc.?) You may have to look at the media example multiple times to accomplish this. You should take notes as you are viewing/reading/etc. the media example. You’ll hand in these notes along with the assignment.
You should treat the media example you chose as a dataset that you will analyze. Are there any themes that you notice in your chosen media? For this paper, you will discuss the findings relating what you saw/heard in you analysis to concepts from our course. Your paper should have the following sections.
Title Page – Should include your paper title, name, course & section number, and the date.
Introduction Briefly introduce the media you examined & what you will be talking about in this paper. (Your introduction should be no more than one page in length.)
Body Discuss some of the themes you noticed in the media example you chose. You can consider nonverbal & verbal forms of communication. Your main points will depend upon what you notice as you analyze your data. Try to focus on the three or four biggest and/or most interesting/important things you notice. In this section, you should also strive to connect your analysis to the concepts we have been discussing in the course.
You must specifically, explicitly reference the course content at least 3 times throughout this part of the paper. (This does not mean just dropping in a term.) You should choose a term/concept/idea that weve talked about. Then quote, paraphrase, or reference it (be sure to cite appropriately & clearly). Unpack the concept (in other words, you need to explain what the referenced term/concept/idea/quote really means) and then explain how it connects to your observations about your media example. Be sure to use specific examples from your media example.
Conclusion Briefly conclude this portion of the paper.
Reference List – Your reference list should include the APA style citation for any resource your referenced in the text of your paper (including your textbook).
Media Notes
This paper will be around 5 pages in length (not including your title page, media notes, or reference list). Please write your papers in correct essay format. (In other words, use regular paragraph and sentence format. Each essay should have an introduction & conclusion, thesis statement, etc.) The paper should be typed and double-spaced with 1-inch margins all around. Use 12-point Times New Roman with regular character spacing. Please remember to attach a title page page with your name and section. (Failure to attach the title page will result in an automatic 5 point penalty.) Any references you make to your textbook or other resources should be properly attributed and cited in APA style both in the text and on a reference list. You must also include the media notes that you used as a part of the project.
Grades will be assigned based upon how well/fully you addressed the requirements of the written assignment. Your discussions should be thoughtful and need to demonstrate a mastery of the material. You should strive to connect the concepts discussed and that have appeared in your text/the class with the things you noticed in your logs/interview. In addition to examining how well you met the content requirements for the assignment, your paper will also be evaluated based on good sentence structure, clarity, organization, appropriate punctuation, APA style of references and general readability.
