Compare & Contrast Two Research Briefs On A Policy Issueq
Write and submit a concise summary essay comparing and contrasting the two briefs you have read. The best essays will include some specific references to both briefs and to themes and/or content we have covered in PP101. What you cover, and how you do it, are up to you. Please bear in mind that, quite often in short essays, “less is more”; please be selective as to points you wish to make, and please make clear to your reader what aspect(s) of the two briefs your short essay aims to address. Starting your essay by declaring what you intend it to do, and then delivering upon that intention, is the mark of a strong essay. By way of suggestion (how you craft your essay is entirely your choice), your essay may opt to address one (1) or more of the following, depending on your own original approach and the content of the briefs you read:
How the authors frame the policy challenges and opportunities
Evidence the authors rely upon
Social values and objectives the authors emphasize
Policy options the authors consider
Authors’ views as to the roles of markets and government
How the authors address political considerations
One or more Eightfold Path concepts (e.g., the problem, the alternatives, the criteria, projecting the future, the trade-offs)

i) The issue briefs linked below are original work, framed by the authors and the sponsoring institutions. They do not treat all relevant policy features in equal levels of coverage and detail (nor should we expect them to). Start with the content and context of the briefs themselves. Read them, and reread them, carefully; think about them critically in terms of what they try to do, and what they choose to say. Then, you should craft and adapt the plan for your essay in light of your own well-informed thoughts about, and reactions to, what you’ve read.
