Semester Project Instructions
For this class you will be required to complete a semester project and submit it by the end of the term. The topic can be any topic related to Geosciences – Earth Science, Geography, Geology, or GIS. To get credit complete the following:
Choose a topic or research activity.
Conduct your research. Find four scholarly sources for your topic (scientific journals, your text, web pages ending in .org, .gov, and .edu are allowed. Interviews with professionals in the field are allowed.
Conduct your field work (if applicable).
Choose a format.
Term paper. Write up your report as a term paper (5-page max) with each section (Introduction, Background, Body, Conclusions, Bibliography) clearly identified.
Some examples of past semester project ideas include:
The geology of Highway 395 between Reno and Mammoth Mountain.
A geologic transect of the Sierra Nevada along Highway 50.
A comparative analysis of Hurricane Katrina and the Galveston Hurricane.
An inventory of geologic formation of the Cascadia Subduction Zone in Northern California.
The deadliest natural disasters in the last 10 years.
The Sustainability of nuclear power in a warming world.
An assessment of hurricane tracks in the North Atlantic.
A suitability assessment for sustainable power development in Northern California.
Remember that you need to research at least four scholarly source for this project. Use the online library as your research tool. Go the the FLC Library website (Links to an external site.).
Addendum:
If you are experiencing conditions that make it difficult to get outside often enough to complete another field report, you can do another Virtual Field Report for your semester project. Use the Field Report instructions and template for your project.
