Crime in America

Purpose:

Crime is one of the most important social problems in America today and to fully understand the causes of crime, the consequences of crime, and the effectiveness of various crime-control strategies we need to view crime from a sociological perspective. A sociological perspective of crime (known as sociological criminology) emphasizes the importance of people as social beings more than individuals and the importance social structure in determining who commits a crime, where crime is committed, and how much crime exists in a group or society. The purpose of this discussion is to examine crime from a sociological perspective by discussing several of the trends and correlates of crime in the United States.

Task:

Recall the crime statistics presented in this lesson. What changes has there been in crime since the 1990s. Do these changes surprise you? What do you think are some of the causes of the change in crime rates over the last several decades?
What are the current public perceptions about crime in the United States? How do they differ from reality? Why do you think people have in the United States tend to have a high fear of crime?
Data from the Uniform Crime Report show that there are large geographic variations in crime within the United States. Traditionally, homicide rates in the south are higher than in other regions of the United States. Why do you believe that the southern United States has a higher homicide rate than other regions of the United States?
