Chamorro-Premuzic & Sanger (2016) claim that depending on the cultural context, behavioral tendencies may be an asset or a weakness and that good leadership is largely personality in the right place. In some cultures and regions throughout the world, direct communication is seen as unnecessarily harsh and the straight-shooting leader might not be appreciated for their leadership style while the diplomatic leader would experience greater success. Leadership styles may clash with the culture and beliefs about the qualities that leaders must display to be considered effective and worth listening to. In a global economy and world, success could best be measured by the ability of leaders to change and adapt their styles to fit with the expected leadership traits of the culture for which they are working. In addition to the regional culture, it is just as important to also take into account the culture of the individual organization. Successful leaders can often redefine the culture, to some extent, to be a reflection of their own personality (Chamorro-Premuzic & Sanger, 2016).
