Technology has advanced tenfold since the 1990s. And with that, so have the methods of conducting research. The vastness of information available on the internet allows for the transfer and receiving of information almost instantaneously. Using the internet decreases the amount of time one would use in collecting information they are searching for. Doing old school research was tough enough, to begin with, but with everything going digital and online, newspapers included, I think you would be hard-pressed to find someone who was willing to conduct extensive research just using hard copies of anything. As an online student, I believe that doors have been opened for so many more to explore educational, and employment options as well as financial options. In educational research, it is important to vet the information as thoroughly as possible, which is why it is best to use peer-reviewed and scholarly information.
Key points that I would make if I were teaching high school students how to research would be: defining a research topic, state sources of the information, choose research methods (books, websites, journals, questionnaires, surveys, databases, etc.), plan your research, collect the data/information, take notes, evaluate the sources of information for validity, know the difference between quantitative and qualitative research and how to use them. Creating mind maps, word trees and diagrams can also be helpful.
