Watch the movie Twelve Angry Men and write a paper (minimum 3 pages double spaced). Reflect on the concepts of small group communication you see at play in the film. Use notes from class and and the notes I posted on BB to identify the communication dynamics that happen in a small group. This assignment is worth 15 points and should be emailed to me as a word doc.
In your paper, be sure to cover these areas as they related to the film. This paper should be in essay for so should have an introduction, body and conclusion. The body should address these issues in essay form without merely answering each question.
Here are some guidelines:
1)Define what a small group is. Does this group meet these criteria?
2) What is the goal of this group?
3) How are rules defined in a small group and what are the rules of this group?
4) What are norms in a group and what are the norms of this group?
5) In terms of roles in a group, which characters played task roles, that is, roles that help the group accomplish its goal? (e.g. initiator, information seeker, opinion seeker, clarifyer, consensus taker)
6) Which characters played social roles, that is, roles that help the relationships among members run smoothly? (e.g. encourager, gate-keeper, harmonizer)
7) Which characters played blockers, that is, roles that prevent the group from working effectively? (withdrawer, dominator, joker, recognition seeker)
8) What is groupthink, and did you see it take place here?
10) How did watching this film help you understand how groups function and how do you think you can use this information as you go forward and engage in small group communication?
PLEASE do not hand in a synopsis of the script (e.g. there was this trial, and all the jurors had different personalities), but rather reflect on the small group concepts discussed in class and notes, using the above questions as guides.
