There is no fixed number for the number of articles and journals that need to be referenced, but I would definitely like a few (as many as you think fits in with the essay).
This needs to be a Cambridge University 2:1 standard. I really need to show depth as well as breadth (so wider reading is essential). It also needs to show some original ideas and independent conclusions (so not just reciting facts). However, I am not actually at university yet, so I can’t have too much degree knowledge. Basically it needs to be someone with A2 knowledge, who has done a lot of independent research, and therefore made it the kind of essay that university admissions officers would find good.
