Discuss about infection Control departments or even Quality departments are tasked with abstracting multiple data points.

Data collection can take many forms, the stakeholder and ultimately the answer or information you are trying to obtain can have a major influence on how that data might be collected. Infection Control departments or even Quality departments are tasked with abstracting multiple data points. This information helps track and monitor what is happening in the hospital for the various care indicators and is used when creating process improvement (PI) initiatives. For departments such as these both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods must be used. One form of quantitative data collection that is used in the IC department is the device report spreadsheet. This form of entering numerical data is a shared spreadsheet that all inpatient departments must fill out daily. The form looks at the numerical count of inpatients on the units and the various devices that they are on. This data is used to develop the facilities’ standard infection ratio (SIR) for device-related infections. Because the stakeholder in this situation doesn’t need further information beyond a numerical count this method of data collection is great. Although in this situation the values dont allow you to do any root because analysis if there is a trend upward in device-related infections. This limitation means that in order to mitigate an issue further work and data collection would be required. A good example of qualitative data collection is the executive rounding that takes place for the environment of care. This form of data collection takes more time but provides a better understanding of the causes of issues and problems. EOC rounding is done on the floor with a reference guide of what surveyors should be looking for. While this data works well for correcting issues and telling the processes that are breaking down it is much harder to track and present to leadership.
