Discuss about the difference between what we are doing and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.”

Assignment:

Mahatma Gandhi said, “The difference between what we are doing and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.” Many people believe that psychology should be playing a more active role in making the world a better place. All of the articles we read this week relate to the intricate relationship between attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors for individuals and society at large. Thinking about all of the articles, and the short video you watched, please choose one of the following problems: 1) reducing binge drinking among college students OR 2) increasing recycling among the U.S. population – and discuss ways to change the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors around the issue. Remember that you can tackle this at the individual level or the societal level.

Make sure to use the information and concepts from this week’s resources to inspire and support your plan (and discuss what pieces of the articles serve as evidence for each of your ideas). You need to change not just the behavior, but the attitudes and beliefs as well. Clearly people have been working on these problems for a long time and they are very complex, but you should be able to provide some insight into ways to change people’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in even small, but meaningful ways. Make sure to give specifics and not just generalizations.
