As highlighted by this week’s readings on political institutions, the executive branch (this includes the head of government) in nondemocratic countries exercise a great deal of influence over the political activities of the other branches of government, including the legislature and judiciary (i.e., Myanmar, Kuwait, North Korea). However, one should ask if having a “strong head of government” is necessarily disadvantageous for a country? Discuss some of the costs and benefits of having a dominant head of government. In your discussion, compare and contrast the powers held by executive leaders in democratic and nondemocratic countries using real world examples. How (if) do they vary in terms of government effectiveness and efficiency?
