PURPOSE: When you write cause/effect essays, you are
likely to have one of three purposes.
You might want to explain why something happened or what may likely happen under certain
circumstances.
You might want to speculate about an interesting topic
You might want to argue or prove a point.
REQUIREMENTS:
Your essay must have at least five paragraphs (Introduction, Three body paragraphs and a conclusion).
You must reference at least two of the readings listed above and use MLA style of documentation.
You should create a thesis statement that focuses your essay and is written as one sentence
that contains three points.
You should develop and include sufficient details and examples to support your thesis statement.
You should choose vocabulary appropriate to the subject and identified audience (remember to use academic vocabulary and avoid using the first person).
You should show effective control of mechanics: paragraphing, punctuation, sentence structure, capitalization and spelling. Pay attention to Run On sentence and Sentence Fragments.
You should remember to use transition words before each boy paragraph and to combine your sentences whenever possible.
AUDIENCE: Always knowing who your audience is when you write is important. For cause/effect essays, it helps to think of your audience as jurors to whom you are going to present a case.
ThInk of some questions just like a lawyer would when formulating an argument.
How should I prepare my readers for what I want to say? What background information do
my readers need?
What kind of evidence do they want? Factual, statistical, anecdotal?
How much do I need to explain in order for my audience to understand my points and make
connections?
