Strategies in working with children with diverse needs Primary Years (Cohort 1g) Case Study Martha is an eight-year-old child who loves music and sports. She was born with Down Syndrome and has been supported by a Learning Support Educator during her educational journey. At present, Martha follows an alternate curriculum and is completing work at Junior 1 Level. Marthas speech and language skills, motor skills, attention, cognitive abilities and socialization skills are all delayed. In fact, she struggles to express her wants and needs verbally and does not always understand what others tell her due to limited vocabulary. She can express herself through the use of single words, yet some articulation difficulties tend to be present. This then impinges on her relationships with others, as despite being very friendly, she finds it hard to maintain conversations. She also tends to approach children in an inappropriate manner by touching them or hugging them. Not all children like this and some tend to avoid her because of this. Martha also struggles to adhere fully to social norms and cues. Difficulties with attention are also present as Martha is constantly on the go, fidgety and squirmy. There are also occasions when she leaves her sit and roams around the classroom. Oppositional and defiant behaviour are also present on some occasions as Martha refuses to comply with her teacher/LSEs requests Part 1: Imagine you were assigned as an LSE to Martha. Discuss strategies you would use in order to help Martha: a) Access the class curriculum; b) Maintain and sustain attention on the task at hand; c) Improve her behaviour; and d) Be more included with her friends. (70 marks) Part 2: The class teacher will be revising the topic of 2D Shapes with the mainstream students. So far, Martha is still not able to identify most shapes, though she knows what a circle is. a) Create a lesson plan for this lesson by keeping in mind the childs learning needs and learning styles. Attach any photos of/resources you would use. b) Discuss how you would assess Marthas learning with regards to this particular topic. (30 marks) Provide justification as to what in your opinion would help Martha and develop a prognosis as to why this could be effective. Base this on current literature evidence. Referencing should be according to APA style.
