Students should use scientific evidence and ethical frameworks to support their position(s). Students will have the opportunity to offer their unique perspectives in those papers, drawing from course discussion, readings, and relevant sources. The purpose of these exercises will be to demonstrate the ability to present these complex and often theoretical discussions in a way that is accessible to the general reader.
One of the clinical ethicists’ roles is explaining complex ethical analyses, options, and decisions to team members, healthcare staff, patients & their families, and the general public. This assignment will help you practice this skill in the form of an OpEd piece written for the average readership. You should be perusing journals and newspapers such as The Hastings Center Report, American Journal of Bioethics, PloS Medicine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, etc. Please choose a topic related to how time, space, and circumstance challenge ethical framework, one that you feel strongly about, and write an OpEd piece on it. The best OpEds should engage the reader and convince the reader of the importance of the topic. The piece can give facts or statistics about the issue, if possible, to support the author’s position. The various sides of the issue should be mentioned, but it should be clear which side the author is advocating. Last but not least, the author should suggest policy enforcement or changes supporting their position. The author may use current state or federal healthcare legislation to support their side. The article must be in the style of writing for the general public.
