“Click” is a play be Brighde Mullins that features two characters who are man and woman. The play is based on a phone conversation between man and woman. The women is in her house while the man is depicted to be miles away in a rehab. However, I argue that the woman is the protagonist and the man is the antagonist.

The protagonist in “Click” is the woman. This is because she is narrating the story while the man is distant from her. Additionally, the woman is presented as the protagonist through metaphors as opposed to using simple words to explain the clicking sound. She is also presented as the protagonist through her goal. In this case, the conversation’s goal was to support the man during his time in rehab. This is evidenced through her use of metaphors because the man used to like them. However, she makes her objective clear towards the end of the play by stating she was attempting to make him feel better.

The woman is the protagonist based on the play’s setting. In this case, the play is set from the woman’s house while he is miles away. This is evidenced through the introduction of the of the play where the man states, “While you’re talking to me. I hear something. What are you doing?” (Mullins 1085). Her role as the protagonist is also depicted towards the end of the play where she states that “I understand how very difficult this is for you, and I’m talking to you” (Mullins 1086). The last statement however is a lie. However, the protagonist makes her objective clear through the statement.

The antagonist in the story is the man. This is evidenced through the source of conflict when he asks the woman about the clicking sound he heard over the phone. Conflict arises because he knew the woman would not tell him the truth. The man introduces conflict into the play by stating, “I’m really sick of your metaphors” (Mullins 1085). The man is the antagonist because he opposes the objective of the protagonist. The woman used metaphors during the phone conversations because she knew that it was something the man liked before he started his rehab. However, the man introduces conflict into the play by stating, “That was before I started rehab” (Mullins 1085). This phrase shows that the man is opposed to the protagonist’s objective of making him feel better about his current situation.

The protagonist in the narration does not overcome the antagonist. This is evidenced through the play’s ending, where the man ends the conversation without allowing the woman to explain herself. However, the text also shows the protagonist overcomes the antagonist through the climax when the man finds out the woman is drinking beer. In this case, one can argue that the man ended the conversation because he felt overcome by the woman’s actions. The protagonist also overcomes the antagonist by drinking beer while having a conversation with the man while he is in rehab. This means that the woman is not supportive and considerate regarding the man’s condition. Her actions of taking beer while talking to a person in rehab depict her lack of care. One can assume that the woman let down the man during his time of need. This shows readers that sometimes bad situations lead you to do things you never expected. Also, that sometimes once a person does something the other does not understand they don’t have sympathy any longer.
