In her Introduction to Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 (xvii-xxvi) Anna Deavere Smith explains her purpose in creating the original stage production and the book version. Speaking about the book version she explains: It includes additional interviews that were not included in the stage versions, which I hope will enrich the readers understanding of the conflicts that erupted on April 29, 1992 after the police officers involved in the beating of Rodney King were found not guilty (xvii). Smith also asks and answers a key question for those who create and/ or study dramatic literature: Where does theater fit into this? Theater can mirror societies. But in order to do that theater must embrace diversity. It must include new characters in our human drama that have not been portrayed on our stages (xxi).
