People are linked by various social ties. The smallest part of social networks is our friends and acquaintances, the people we hang out with and do things together. Cliques, family, friends, and acquaintances can all be bases for social networks. They make up clusters of regular social interaction. Often these clusters overlap. Research suggests that our social networks are so interrelated that almost everyone in the United States is connected by just five links.
