1. What are the similarities and differences between Quantum Measurement and Memory Research? Use at least two interpretations of quantum measurement to make your point. Be as specific as possible about the process of what’s going on in each. In other words, HOW is the measurement process similar or different?
2. Give a structured account of Bohr’s view of measurement as discussed by Barad. What does it consist of? What other Quantum Interpretations is it similar to? In what way? How can we apply Bohr’s view to understanding a social phenomenon like social justice (any aspect of it)? The background for this is there is a lot of socially-relevant information that is ever-happening within our communities, which need to be addressed and understood. Whether we like to admit it, this is one of our main measurement setups—our community. Apply Bohr’s view to it. Generate some parallels that could maybe enlighten people about how to apply quantum mechanics to social justice.
3. Recreate Hume’s Problem of Induction and the Raven Paradox. Put your own twist on them by using different examples. Make sure you explain what is so paradoxical here. Why should we—scientists, non-scientists, humans—care at all about these problems of inductive reasoning? For example, I’m just trying to finish my job, go home, and watch some old episodes of Doug. Why should induction matter to me?
4. We started this course by talking about our initial interaction with the world. We generated two clashing views: the Perspectival View of Measurement vs. the Stabilization View of Measurement. We’ve generated many examples on both sides. Which theory/view of measurement is more adequate to scientific practice? Use at least 3 examples to discuss why one of these theories/views more adequately addresses actual scientific practice. Explain why. Are your examples fair examples? Do they extend across the sciences? When you use the 3 examples, you can discuss ones presented in class. You are not allowed to use temperature measurement, Quantum Measurement, and memory.
5. What is one insight that could be made into human beings, ultimate reality, or any other really deep realm of philosophy from studying any of this stuff? Here, be as broad and as raw as possible. The question that I always like to ask after a presentation, class, journal article, book, etc. is: Who cares? So, think on it. And, hit me with some philosophical poetry (not actual poetry (unless you want to)
