This chapter covers both eating disorders and sleeping-wake disorders. The chapter explores the diagnostic and etiological factors associated with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. There is also significant emphasis placed on treatment and some of the difficulties with treatment of these serious mental health problems.Discussion questions:Part 1: Consider the below hypothetical character, Maria. Maria does not meet criteria for any disorder, but shows symptoms of several disorders. Pick 2 disorders that you consider as a possible differential diagnosis for her at this point. List the symptoms you see present for these disorders as a rationale for a possible diagnosis for Maria.Maria almost never feels good enough. She does not have many friends and she worries that others will judge her, in part because she feels she is fat. Maria is frequently in tears, because her diets never work and she ends up eating past fullness at least once a week. She just hates that she feels so out of control and lonely all the time.Part 2: Many of us will have difficulty sleeping at some point in our lives. College is an especially difficult time to establish good sleep habits. But how do we know when our difficulty constitutes a disorder? What is an effective treatment according to the research (not websites)? Do you this treatment approach would work for students at CU, Boulder? Finally, what is one remaining question you have about the reading and/or lecture? As always, use your textbook and scientific research to support your answers.
