Ethnography

If you choose to write an ethnography, you must take at least one concept we have covered in the course and explore it further through an example on which you conduct preliminary research. Rather than summarizing the work of other authors, this option entails doing your own (mini) field-work. This could involve looking at peoples instagram posts, studying interactions in Facebook groups, investigating sneaker culture on reddit, or many other options. Concepts here can be broadperhaps you want to research masculinity within a particular groupbut given the length of the paper, if the concept youre interested in is broad then your field site should be narrow. Students should choose a topic, conduct research, and develop a thesis based on that research. You must draw on at least one theoretical argument from a readings on the syllabus in analyzing your research, and are welcome to integrate more than one. For example, you could use Evelyn Nakano Glenns integrated framework, or Sarah Haleys approach to understanding race and gender, or David Valentines conceptualization of labels and categories, etc. We are living through a pandemic, and I do not want students to endanger themselves or others. Please do not conduct any in-person research for this paper. If you feel you have a compelling reason that you need to do in-person research and can do so safely, please email me to discuss it. Please also be sure you are conducting research in an ethical way. You can reference our recorded class session on the final paper for additional guidance or email me with any questions.
