Explain how Rowell uses setting and meaningful objects to establish the socioeconomic status of the characters in Eleanor & Park.

Use evidence from the book to answer the prompts.

For our last three to four page-paper of the semester, you will compose a detailed analysis of Rainbow Rowells Eleanor & Park. As with the previous essays, you should feel free to draw on aspects of lecture/discussion in your paper, but remember that the essay must be more than a restating of the material covered in class. To receive a passing grade on the essay, youll need to include direct, properly cited quotations from the novel and have a clear thesis statement that encapsulates your argument. 1. Part of what makes Eleanor & Park unique is that it features central characters that are disconnected from the people around them. Drawing on evidence from the novel, identify the factor that most contributes to this sense of alienation. Is it family life or parenting? Poverty or cultural difference? Bullying at school or elsewhere? 2. Explain how Rowell uses setting and meaningful objects to establish the socioeconomic status of the characters in Eleanor & Park. Some questions to consider as you construct your argument: How does Eleanors home differ from Parks, even though they live in the same basic neighborhood? What things does Park have that Eleanor doesnt? How do the living conditions of Parks parents (and even grandparents) influence his well being? You might also consider examining the spaces and things associated with minor characters such as Eleanors father, Steve, and Tina.3. Explain the importance of music and/or literature in Eleanor & Park by analyzing at least four specific works referenced in the novel. To help limit the scope of your paper, consider choosing one of the following options on which to focus: specific songs and books, which books foster relatioships between characters and why, or how certain texts relate to the plot of the novel. (Note: comic books/graphic novels do count as literature, so dont feel limited to only the novels, poems, and stories mentioned in the book.)4. In Eleanor & Park, Rainbow Rowell creates characters with a clear and often unique personal style. Focusing on a few particular characters, explain the connection between clothing and character in the novel. What do the key elements in each characters wardrobe convey about his or her interests, values, and living conditions? In your conclusion, explain why its important to pay attention to such seemingly superficial details.5. Kitt Steinkellner explores efforts to ban Eleanor & Park in her article Dont Ban Books Like Eleanor & Park, Teens Need Them. Is Steinkellner right that teens need books like Eleanor & Park, even though some adults might find the material objectionable? Or is banning Eleanor & Park a legitimate option, given its subject matter and style? Use specific examples from the novel to support your position. You may also want to use examples from Eleanor & Park to explain why an adult might want to ban it in the first place. (Link to article in short essay four module on Canvas.)6. This novel has a number of overlapping concerns in common with our first three texts pick a prompt for any of our previous essays and apply the same lens to Eleanor & Park. As with the last essay, parent/child relationships, representations of food, and the role of communication in the novel might be good places to start.Note: Be sure to correctly cite any outside sources consulted in the composition process. Any paper that bears too close a resemblance to information available online will receive a zero. Plagiarism of any kind may result in failure of the course; if you have any confusion about how to properly cite a source, ask me.
